Matthew 9:2 says, “Then behold, they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, ‘Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you’.” Why would Jesus tell a desperate, crippled man to be of good cheer? Couldn't he see the enormity of this man's problems and the hopelessness of his situation? Yes, of course, Jesus could clearly see everything about the paralyzed man. But he also knew that one miracle already happened and another was on the way. The paralytic's sins were forgiven and that was enough reason for him to be of good cheer. Do we realize that just the fact that we are freed from the penalty of sin is enough for us all to be happy despite our other circumstances? And Jesus knew that he would also soon heal the man's physical problem. The miracle was on its way and hope and faith gives us another reason to be of good cheer. Let us trust God with all of our circumstances and be of good cheer matter what is happening.
